Although forecasts
called for 18-25 mph gusts with wind chills in the low 30's, 16
tough ladies braved the weather to play the first ever Fantasy Halloween
Golf Tournament. Playing temperatures were actually a balmy 70 degrees
at tee off. And "Pace of Play" was the fastest in league
history (under 30 minutes!).
The Lucky Ladies
(Charlene, Cheryl, Janice and Millie) scored an unlucky 13 on the front
nine. Trailing by 2 at the turn, the Pumpkinheads
(Karen S, Mary R, Grace and Marcie) took the lead and the Fantasy Trophy
with a final score of 26. Then it was time for JJ Deli breakfast and a
wonderful cake.
Per the Handicap
Committee these scores should NOT be posted!
I can't remember who took what place but our costume contestants and winners
were Sister Mary Mulligan, Slutty Southern Belle, Masquerade Lady and
Flamingo Pirate. I suppose the rest of us are slackers. Though
Janice had a costume ... just not sure why she didn't want to be in the
contest.
Thanks to Grace and the rest of the Social Committee for the wonderful
costume contest prizes and beautiful cake.

Report ~ Oct 22, 2008
Good evening, all you gorgeous
golfer gurls!
Wednesday we played a "Grab
Bag" tournament ~ the game for the day was picked randomly from an
envelope and kept secret until the end of the day whereupon it was revealed
to be Odd Holes (proportional handicaps, low net). Despite the
ferocious winds and tough pin placements by The Evil Groundskeeper, a
fun day was had by all.
Congratulations to Linda Trippett (flight winner, Closest to the Pin and Low
Putts), and to Ellen Canova and Janice Esser, also
flight winners. Because Linda won flight money, the putting
dollars were paid to Charlotte McComas,
Charlene Clancy, Helen Hile and Ann Hoffer. Nice birdies by Cheryl Crellin and Charlotte McComas.
There's a sad story about chip-ins
~ 2 chip-ins, but sadly only one of them counted
because you gotta pay to play. Sorry,
Janice, but Linda Rosenberg got all the money.
Other News:
Charlotte McComas tied for 2nd low net at the VSGA tournament at Blue Ridge
Shadows last week.
We've been missing Mary
Ann Nagley the last few weeks, so I gave her a
jingle. She was on vacation for awhile and came back with a wicked case
of laryngitis. She hopes to be back with us soonest.
Reminders: Next week will be our amazing Halloween Scramble ~
8:30 SHOTGUN ~ with Mystery Monsters, scratch off cards, prizes, and
computer-formed teams. You MUST be signed up by 5:00 Tuesday to be in
the tournament.
And if you haven't already done
so, get your form and money for the luncheon to Grace Wright by
Wednesday ~ that is absolutely the last day for you to make your reservation
~ we'd hate for you to miss this great end-of-season celebration.
You have until December 15 to
spend your Club House dollars, but you might as well spend them now and save
yourself a trip later. For new members, the weekly prize money is
paid in Club House credits ~ so be sure to check with the staff to see how
many dollars you have to spend.
That's it for now ~ go Redskins
and Hokies (tho I'm a bit
conflicted there, since my #1 son graduated from both VA Tech and FSU; since
I know you're all interested (tee hee), he happens
to have flown to Tallahassee from his home in Bethel, Alaska for the
game).
Please stay warm and
wonderful until we meet again.

My, oh my! Where has the
summer gone?!!! Can it really be late October already?
Guess so ~ but the weather's been
wonderful and we all enjoyed the beautiful day Wednesday!
Congratulations to our Grand Ace
winners ~ Jacqueline Jaffe (low gross) and Carol Fink
(low net). Runners up were Ronnie Gordon and Judy DuHaime.
Congratulations as well to the
non-qualifiers flight ~ Kay Flynn and Grace Wright were our
winners, followed by Mary Robinson, Helen Hile and
Barbara Hall.
'Ya know, it's just a crying shame. So many, many times this
year I've played with the winners ~ but I remain the big loser this year
(send your sympathy cards elsewhere, please, I don't
need to be reminded!).
But back to business! Last
week Kay Flynn was closest to
the pin (and birdied it!) ~ and Charlotte McComas, Sue Massa and Marcie Kelleher got the
putting money. A number of birdies, but only two
chip-ins ~ Joan Louise McCaffrey and Grace Wright.
Complete results, as usual,
attached.
About last week's pace: The slow play last week was primarily a function of
the Pro Shop's assignment of starting holes ~ the groups were bunched up
too closely. Compounding the situation were the 3 groups they
sent out after 8:10 ~ delaying our first group on #1 for about
15 minutes. Anyway, it was a disaster as you all know. There's a
long winter ahead and the HLGC 'powers' will be working with the Pro Shop to
try to resolve some of these issues. One can only hope :-)
Of Note: Our most excellent Charlotte McComas
won 2nd low net in a combined (men and women) VSGA event at Laurel Hills on
Thursday. Way to go, Charlotte!
Upcoming Events: I'm sure I'll have the pairings for Wednesday early
in the week, so be looking for them. Also coming up: details of our
wonderful and always fun Halloween Scramble Wed Oct 29. This one's gonna be good, ladies ~ trust me. And please
remember to thank Marcie Kelleher again for her wonderfully
creative ideas and for putting in the real work it has taken to make our
season so special.
Ladies, stay warm, enjoy the
wonderful fall colors, and we'll look forward to seeing each other again on
Wednesday!

Congratulations to Sally Smallwood, our 2008 HLGC Club
Champion, who successfully defended her title
against strong competition.
Trailing Sally by one stroke was
Bernie Light who took first place in her flight with a total score
of 169.
Cheryl Crellin and Judy Bear won first place in their
flights.
Charlotte McComas took CTTP, scored 2 birdies, and won some
putting money. Other great putters: Cheryl Crellin (28!), Ellen Camp and Lynne Cancelosi.
Complete results are attached.
Congratulations to all who competed!
Next week is the Grand Ace tournament. 8:30 shotgun start. Please
be kind to the starter and check in no later than 8 am. See
attached list for Grand Ace qualifiers ~ those who have not
qualified for the tournament play for low net. If you want
to play, you MUST sign up NO LATER THAN SUNDAY OCT 12 at 5
pm. No exceptions!
News from other tournaments: HLGC members Charlene Clancy, Charlotte McComas and Bernie Light (and HLGC friend
Connie Christianson) won First Place Overall Low Net at last
Tuesday's VSGA Tournament at Heritage Hunt with a net team score of 56 with
8 natural birdies! Today, Bernie Light won Closest
to the Pin and Ladies' Longest Drive at the Georgia V.
Nichols Campbell tournament at Herndon Centennial. Also playing
today: Linda Rosenberg, Ann Hoffer
(and Ann's husband Stefan) and Pat Campbell and her husband Bob
(the GVN-C Foundation honors Bob's mother). A grand day and a good
cause.
DON'T FORGET TO GET YOUR
LUNCHEON FORM AND MONEY TO GRACE WRIGHT ASAP.
Ladies, have a wonderful weekend
~ see 'ya Wednesday!

WOW. Some incredible
scores! Congratulations to everyone.
It was a longgggggggg
day. Cart path only contributed ~ but most of us waited on every
shot even before the rain started about 1:00. Lots of comments
about the pace ~ hopefully things will be better next week!
For Round 1, Bernie Light
and Sally Smallwood are tied in first place, with Jacqueline Jaffe
and Marcie Kelleher (also tied) only a few strokes behind. Also
in the hunt ~ Linda Trippett, Ronnie
Gordon, Charlene Clancy and Charlotte McComas.
Ought to be a thrilling Round 2!
Cheryl Crellin arrived feeling awful, but played an amazing
game to lead the second flight. Special kudos to Cheryl for needing
only 26 putts ~ just 1 putt short of the HLGC record of 25 set by Helen
Hile last year.
Linda Trippett took Closest to the Pin (breaking Sue Massa's 2
week streak) and Charlene Clancy came in 2nd in the putting
department.
Eight birdies and 4 chipins ~ check out complete results on the
attachment.
THIS WEEK: 8:30 shot gun
start ~ Round 2 of the Club Championship. If you're planning to play and didn't sign up, be sure to
let Charlene Clancy know by 5:00 tomorrow night (Sun, Oct 5) ~ no
extensions or exceptions!
Reminder: Everyone is expected to check by 8:00. As
explained in the Member Handbook, players arriving after 8:15 are
not eligible for the tournament or chip in or closest to the pin contests..
Ladies, have a fine fall
weekend ~ and we'll see each other Wednesday!
